Identification
Body length of 80 cm, shoulder height of 50 cm, weight to 15 kg. Small species, mostly rich brown in coloration with slightly clearer throat and belly. Small head with elongated antlers and short muzzle. Black stripe on antlers’ base.

Range and habitat
This subspecies is endemic to Taiwan. The species also occurs in most of south-central, eastern and south-eastern China. Species introduced to England. Lives in dense subtropical forests and scrubland, alpine grasslands, to 3500 m.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Not listed
Status : The species has a large range and is at least locally common. Chinese populations are decreasing because of continuous habitat loss.
