Identification
Body length of 2.14 m, shoulder height 1.42 m and weight up to 400 kg. Large head. Coloration unmistakable, dark brown on back, flanks and head, white on muzzle, legs, neck, limbs and lower half of flanks. Long erect black mane.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs western-central China. Species also found in south-west China, western China, north India, north Nepal and north-east Pakistan. Lives in alpine meadows, alpine steppes and desert steppes from 2700 to 5300 m.

Status : The species is numerous and mostly lives in protected areas. Its range is fragmented but so far, most populations remain safe.
