Body length of 2.46 m, shoulder height 1.40 m and weight up to 320 kg. Very muscular body, small head, rounded ears, short erect mane. Black and white stripes are wide and become even wider on flanks and rump. No secondary stripes.
Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in Zambia, DR COngo, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia. Species also found from Angola and Zambia to South Africa. Lives in grasslands, savannas and woodlands, never far from water.

Status : The species is still common in many places but declining in others because of poaching and habitat reduction. This subspecies is the commonest.
