Identification
Body length to 65 cm, tail length to 58 cm, weight up to 10 kg. Conical head with long and thick rostrum with dark nose. Scales are rounded olive to reddish-brown or grey. Inner side of legs and belly covered with long and thin white hairs.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in south-east Asia, from south Myanmar and Vietnam to Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo, Java and nearby smaller islands. Lives in primary and secondary rainforests and plantations, up to 1500 m.

IUCN RED LIST : CRITICALLY ENDANGERED
CITES : Appendix I
Status : The species has been driven to extinction in most of its range because of unsustainable hunting. Its scales are highly prized in Chinese medicine.
