Adults can reach a total length of 58 cm for a weight of 5.4 kg. Superficial marmot-like appearance with tusk-like incisors. Body covered with large black vibrissae. Fur coloration is dark brown to beige or grey brown. Black snout.
Range and habitat
Subspecies found in South Africa. The species occurs from north Africa, middle east and Arabian peninsula to South Africa. Lives from arid deserts to rainforests, with rocky outcrops, up to 4000 m.
