Identification
Adults can grow to about 40 cm in length with a tail at least 20 cm long. Males are bigger than females and recognized by their pink-red head, back and first half of body. Rest of body and limbs are violet-blue. Females are dark brown.

Range and habitat
The species is found in Eastern Africa, occurring from Kenya to Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania. Lives in savannas and grasslands with sheet-like rocky outcrops.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Not listed
Status : The species has a large range and can occur close to human settlements. It is regularly caught and exported for the wild animals trade.
