Identification
Adults can reach a total length of up to 1.60 m for a weight above 8 kg. Very long dorsal crest, large spiny scales around cheeks and jaws. Males are dark grey to almost red, females brown with transversal bands and pearl-like spots.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs on Cuba and nearby small Islands and has been introduced to Puerto Rico. The other subspecies is found on Little Cayman Island. Mostly found in lowland rocky and coastal areas with sandy beaches.

IUCN RED LIST : VULNERABLE
CITES : Appendix I
Status : This species is listed as Vulnerable. Although it is still declining in its range, it is bred in big numbers and targeted by a conservation program.
