Identification
Adults can grow up to 35 cm in total length. Large but short triangular head. Coloration variable, usually grey to brown-reddish with black and white spotting on back and flanks. Visible black collar on neck. Tail is covered with spiny scales.

Range and habitat
The species is endemic to Madagascar and occurs in the western part of the Island (commoner in the north). Other subspecies found on Grand Comoro island. Lives mostly in dry forests, sometimes riparian forests and plantations.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Not listed
Status : The species seems to remain stable so far and still has a large population. The Comoros subspecies is critically endangered.
