Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 1.89 m. Heavy-bodied with large triangular head. Coloration ranges from olive-grey to dark brown with black-chevron shaped markings on back and brown longitudinal dorsal line. Unmistakable.

Range and habitat
The species is found in North America, in most of the eastern half of USA, from New England, south to Florida, west to Texas. Lives in both humid and dry forests, woodlands, both in lowlands and mountains.

Status : The species has a large range and remains at least locally common. It could be vulnerable to habitat loss and persecution.
