The species reaches 115 cm in length. Visible ridge between eyes and round snout. Coloration is bright green with violet skin. White stripe behind eyes on cheeks and lower flanks (not always visible). Males have red and white flank stripes.
Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in most of south and east China, in a small area in North Korea and on Taiwan. The other subspecies is endemic to Hainan island. Lives in primary rainforests, woodlands, urban gardens, in lowlands and mountains.

Status : The species has a large range and adapts to a great variety of habitats. So far, it faces no known threats and remains locally common.
