Identification
Small black bill, long graduated black and white tail, white rump, rufous-orange underparts. Female duller and greyer. Subspecies with shorter tail, less iridescence on black.

Range and habitat
Subspecies occurs in Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, west Java and nearby islands. Found in forest clearings, undergrowth, bamboo forests, overgrown plantations, to 1750 m.

Status : The species is widespread but Indonesian subspecies are facing high risk of extinction because of unsustainable capture for the trade. Captive breeding programs are being set up.
