Identification
The species grows to 21 cm for a weight of 51 g. This subspecies has male shiny black on back, wings, tail , breast and head. White wing band and tail edges, white belly. Female duller with grey-black wings and head, greyer breast.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in south Thailand, Malaysia, Sumatra, West Java and Borneo. Species found from India to China, south to west Indonesia. Lives in dry and open forests, forest edges, plantations and parks, to 1900 m.

Status : The species is common to locally abundant in its large range. Some populations in Indonesia and Singapore have declined recently.
