Identification
Adults can reach 24 cm in length for a weight of 98 g. Plumage slaty grey on head, breat and belly. Wings have a dark brown tinge. Yellow eyes. Bicolored bill, grey with yellow tip. Yellow legs. Conspicuous grey tuft above bill base. Subspecies with longer and glossier crown hackles, and darker flanks.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs from Myanmar to north Peninsular Malaysia. Species also found in western India and Malaysia. Lives in forest edges, open woodlands, plantations up to 2000 m.

Status : The species is locally abundant and generally quite common. It has been introduced in Taiwan and Pacific archipelagos. Locally treated as a pest.
