Identification
Adults can reach 12 cm in length for a weight of 17 g. Male has velvety black plumage with bright turquoise blue spotting on back, bend of wing and rump. Bright blue head with black mask and throat. Female is bluish-green.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in Central and South America, from Costa Rica to Panama, west Colombia and north-west Ecuador. Lives in tropical humid forest, forest edges, cloudforests, up to 1500 m.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species has a small range and most of its is at potential risk of deforestation. The species is globally uncommon, only seasonally common.
