Identification
Adults can reach 17 cm in length for a weight of 42.5 grams. Both sexes have silvery grey bill. Male is shiny black with slight iridescent blue tinge and small white marking on bend of wing. Female is uniformly light rufous to rufous-brown.

Range and habitat
The species occurs from Nicaragua to north Colombia and scattered populations from Colombia to Bolivia, then from Venezuela to north Argentina. Lives in clearings, forest edges, plantations, gardens and cultivations, to 1800 m.

Status : The species is quite common although sometimes local in its range. It has benefited from partial deforestation in some areas.
