Identification
One of the largest species of its genus, reaching a body length of 20 cm. Very large flat head with huge mouth and distinctive horn-like projections over eyes. Coloration usually cream to beige with faint darker banding on flanks and head.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South America, from central Colombia to Peru and north Bolivia, east to Venezuela, Guianas and Brazil. Lives in humid tropical rainforests, close to rivers and lakes.

Status : The species is fairly rare, only locally common but it has a huge range and can tolerate a certain degree of habitat modification. Not threatened so far.
