Identification
Adults can grow to 11 cm in length, females being bigger than males. Pointed snout, eyelids with spine-like extension. Head flatter than M. nasuta. Coloration beige-brown with large dark area on back. Tubercles on flanks.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South-East Asia and is apparently endemic to Java in Indonesia. Populations in Sumatra and Malaysia are another species. Lives in primary and secondary forests, rarely in plantations, to 2200 m.

Status : The species has a small range but remains locally common and can adapt to man-made environments. It is occasionally collected for the trade.
