Identification
Adults can reach 69 cm for a weight up to 5 kg. Very big eyes and large upturned mouth. Fins are broad and long, especially pectoral, anal and dorsal fins. Coloration mostly bright red to orange red. Fins lighter with red to black margins.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in Indo-Pacific area, from East Africa to Korea and south Australia, east to Baja California and Peru. Atlantic Ocean from Canada to Argentina. Lives in hard-bottomed areas with rocky walls and ledges, from 40 to 400 m.

Status : The species has a huge distribution. It is exploited in parts of its range but no declines have been noted at this time.
