Identification
The species grows to 45 cm. Very large red eyes, upturned mouth, elongated body. Dark red to blackish fins without spots, caudal fin strongly lunate with broad dark edge. Body silvery to dark red with row of small spots on lateral line.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in Indo-Pacific area, from Red Sea and South Africa to French Polynesia, north to south Japan, south to north Australia. Lives around continental slopes near reefs and rocky areas, to 250 meters deep.

Status : The species has a huge distribution. It is targeted by fisheries in many parts of its range but this isn’t believed to be a threat at this time.
