Notes : No subspecies known.
Adults can grow to 40 cm in length for a weight of 1.5 kg. Rounded back, small mouth. Silvery grey with curved longitudinal rows of dark dots on upper flanks. Pelvic and anal fins with bright and thick yellow edge, lower tail fin yellow.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in the north-west Pacific Ocean from South Korea, Japan and Chinese coasts to Taiwan and north Vietnam. Lives in shallow coastal waters, often in estuaries and lower reaches of rivers.

Status : The species is targeted by fisheries throughout its range and this is believed to have cause massive declines in some populations, especially in China.
