Identification
The species can reach a total length of 50 cm for a maximum weight of 3.2 kg. Rounded back, large eyes and mouth and laterally compressed body. Silvery grey coloration with faint vertical bars on flanks and dark edges to fins.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the western Pacific Ocean, from south Hokkaido (Japan) to Korean peninsula, south to Taiwan. Absent from Ryukyu islands. Lives in bays, shallow rocky reefs and brackish waters, down to 50 meters deep.

Status : The species is targeted by fisheries throughout its range but remains relatively common. There has been some declines, particularly near Japan.
