Identification
Maximum length is 1 m for a weight of 14.2 kg. Laterally compressed and high-profiled body with steep forehead. Visible teeth on both jaws. Coloration silvery with bright blue spots on flanks, black spots on head and yellowish belly.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in Eastern Atlantic Ocean, from the British Isles to Senegal and also in Mediterranean Sea. Lives not too far from shores, above rocky bottoms, down to 200 meters.

Status : The species’ populations are fragmented and the main population (Mediterranean) has experienced important decline because of overfishing.
