Notes : No subspecies known.

Identification
The species can reach 25 cm in length, usually less. Juveniles with white belly and flanks with yellow and black bands. Adults mostly white, brown forehead and back with yellow lines and two parallel curving red lines.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Maldives and Laccadive Islands to Fiji and Tonga, to South Japan, south to Lord Howe Island. Lives in coral and rocky reefs, to 25 m. Juveniles more in lagoons and rubble areas.

Status : The species is common and widespread. It is caught quite regularly for the pet trade but so far it isn’t considered a threat.
