Identification
The species can reach a maximum length of 40 cm for a weight of 120 g. Elongated and laterally compressed body. Prominent yellow lateral line on back half of body with chevron-like marks on silvery flanks. Tail fin dark yellowish.

Range and habitat
This species in the Indo-Pacific area, from Red Sea and east Africa to Hawaii, north to Japan, south to Australia. Colonizes the Mediterranean sea, west to Malta. Found over sandy bottoms around coral reefs in coastal waters.

Status : The species has a huge range and remains mostly common despite being locally overexploited by fisheries (especially in Asia).
