Identification
The species reaches a length of 64 cm for a weight of 3.8 kg. Round back, small head a mouth, laterally compressed body. Flanks are very smooth and shiny silvery. Elongated fins are yellow, darkening to black on tips.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the western Atlantic ocean, from north USA to Gulf of Mexico, south to Brazil. Locally found in Argentina and west Indies. Lives in coastal waters, bays, estuaries and areas with wave action, to 70 m.

Status : The species is very common in suitable habitat within its range. Targeted by fisheries and may suffer from overfishing on local scale.
