Identification
Medium-sized porcupine reaching 66 cm in length for a weight of 5.4 kg. Coloration is dull greyish-brown with white-tipped hairs on cheeks and flanks, becoming small spines on rest of body. Very thick black and white quills on back.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in South-East Asia and is endemic to the island of Borneo, both in Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. Lives in primary and secondary forests, open areas in forests, up to 1200 m.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Not listed
Status : The species is endemic to Borneo and can survive outside forests. Its status needs to be reassessed since it is also hunted locally.
