The species reaches a body length of 24 cm for tail length of 23 cm and weight up to 400 g. Very variable species. This subspecies has black crown, back and tail, bright rufous limbs and belly and large white band from cheeks to hindlimbs.
Range and habitat
This subspecies is endemic to southern Peninsular Malaysia. The species occurs in South East Asia, from extreme south Thailand to Sumatra and Borneo. Lives mostly in tall and secondary forests, sometimes gardens, up to 1200 meters.

Status : The species has a wide distribution and remains fairly common in the wild, occurring in protected areas. Some endemic forms could be threatened.
