Identification
The species can grow to 80 cm, rarely to 100 cm. Short-tailed snake with triangular head and flat blunt snout. Ground coloration variable, from nearly cream to dark brown. Dark edged-blotches on back, large blotches on flanks.

Range and habitat
The subspecies is found from Indonesia (Sulawesi, Moluccas) to New Guinea. Other subspecies found in Bismarck Archipelago. Lives in forests, swamps and cultivated areas.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species is still believed to be safe although large numbers of specimens are traded from New Guinea (nominate subspecies). Monitoring needed.
