Identification
Adults can reach up to 2 meters in length. Long prehensile tail, large head with broad snout and very distinctive large labial pits on both lips. Bright green coloration with white transversal bands. Juveniles are bright red and white.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South America, from eastern and southern Venezuela to the Guianas, Suriname and Brazil north to the Amazon river. Lives in lowland tropical rainforests up to 200 m above sea level.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species is still common so far although it is locally persecuted and caught in fairly big numbers for the trade, especially in Suriname.
