Identification
The species reaches up to 180 cm in body length. Head not distinct from body. Juveniles have bright orange and black transversal bands. Adults are much duller, sometimes becoming almost entirely black.

Range and habitat
This species is endemic to the Bismarck Archipelago, off east New Guinea and western Solomon Islands. Lives in lowland primary and secondary rainforests, plantations and open areas.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species is still locally common but overexploitation for the international trade has been recorded in the past. Population monitoring is important.
