Identification
Adults can reach up to 3 meters in length. Unmistakable species with large head. Coloration mostly black with strong iridescence. Belly is white. White to cream bands on lower flanks. Labial scales show white spots.

Range and habitat
This species is endemic to the northern central parts of New Guinea, including Irian Jaya and Papua-New Guinea. Lives in tropical moist montane forests, at altitude over 1000 m.

IUCN RED LIST : DATA DEFICIENT
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species has a small range and could be vulnerable from overcollecting and habitat loss. Legally protected but still heavily traded.
